An Original Idea?

Let's face it. We're in the 21st century and the world has a LOT of books out there. I guess the question today is how do you get an original idea.

Honestly, I think we're past that point. Okay, that's a lie, but let's face it. Most of the time, we see a movie or read a book that sparks something in us. It doesn't even have to be that complicated. You could take a sip of coffee and think about a novel about a guy traveling the world and meeting some chick in a coffee shop. Weird, right? But true.

My book ideas come from what I read, what I watch, and what I see around me. Maybe I watched a movie with zombies and I thought about these two characters... Okay, I'm not giving you all of my ideas! ;) But the point is, I think everything we write about is ultimately based off of something else.

It's not always true, but subconsciously, I believe it to be true. I have been reading the Iron Prophecy series by Julie Kagawa (amazing books too - you should check them out) and wow. I love the story line, but ultimately, even that has taken a little piece of A Midsummer Night's Dream. I feel that taking one thing and modifying it to be your own is kinda what we do. Maybe you saw an action movie that you loved and couldn't wait to adapt it into your own thing. This isn't a bad thing. Trust me. We do it without even knowing. Maybe you want to base a love off of Rose and Jack from the Titanic or maybe even Morticia and Gomez from the Adams family (that's love, people. Come on.) It's not unusual to take pieces from things that you see all around you. When you come up with the plot you're looking for, trust me, it's the best feeling ever!

Stay tuned for a post filled with photos for inspiration!
